I found your site very interesting as I was looking for possible spellings of the surname Caddow/Caddies/Cadiz at the time. I have traced my family back as far as Robert Caddow/Caddies born Ireland c1775. I was wondering if any Cadzow's moved from Scotland to Ireland prior to this time and then returned to Ayrshire, as the name only appears in St Quivox, after 1820. They only moved further afield during the 1850's.

My Grandmother married Charles Cadzow of St.Arnaud, Victoria, Australia. My father, born prior this marriage, inherited the surname, Cadzow, surely not the first time this ever happened in family Cadzow. While travelling in the UK in 88' I was lucky enough to learn some history thru Hamilton Library. Thanks for compiling some of that and other information into this website. I'm sure that my children will one day be pleased that someone took the time to help them know the roots of their surname. Feel free to reply. I intend to continue looking for history.

Great site, my girlfriend found it while browsing. I'll have a closer look when I get some time. I'm a Cadzow, born in Glasgow, lived in Australia, now working in Singapore, so you can stick a pin in that part of the world as another Cadzow stronghold.

Absolutely brilliant page. I was completely bowled over to find a Scottish connection to my family name. The Cadzow family is clearly of French origin, specifically Breton, the celtic portion of North Western France. Families here in French Canada usually spell the name CADIEU or CADIEUX (not 'gift', as you suggest, which is 'cadeau') but these seem to be French versions of the traditional Breton CADIOU. The Cadieux arrived in Canada from Western France about 1654. Moreover, many variations of Cadzow you note would be recognizable phonetic renditions of name here in Canada. One question...I notice that a number of your Medieval ancestors have the prefix "de" attached to their names, (Willhus de Cadiou, Adam de Cadiou) which would indicate nobility. Any information about this? Many thanks,

I wondered if you could help me, I know that as primarily being a lowland family, the Hamiltons do not have associated family names, or 'septs' as they are called by some, but that they have families of descent. What I was wondering was if you knew if my family is maybe a family of descent. I must confess to being a little confused! My maiden name is Caldow, I was sure that I had seen this listed under the Hamilton clan in a tartan clan book. Do you think thank Caldow may be a derivitive of Cadzow? Any help/information you could maybe give me would be really appreciated.

Greetings: A very interesting name. The linguistic etymology of this name relates to Phoenician, ie. Carthaginian place names. Some of these are Carthage - ancient city destroyed by the Romans 202 B.C. near Tunis, North Africa and New Carthage/Cartagina and Caditz in Spain. Caditz was once known as Herculaneum re: Pillars of Hercules/Strait of Gibralter. The root word "Cad" relates to the cod fish/cod fishermen and the Basques. The Basque lands - Euskadi - once included part of France, which may be relevant to your ancestors from France. The Basques speak a version of the ancient language of the Picts; re: the ancient history of your family in Scotland. It is very possible that your family were the original Phoenician founders of the city of Glasgow/Glatzko/Khatzko and used the location as a base for their northern activities. After the defeat of Carthage, and later the Iberian Peninsula, by the Romans, they probably made Glasgow their permanent home.

My name is neacal. I'm a Cadzow from Australia. Having stumbled across this page I was alarmed to find that most Cadzows consider themselves to be of clan Hamilton. I was brought up to believe that the Hamiltons were the scum of the earth and had in fact stolen the land from the Cadzows. my family were in fact broken men of the clann Domhnuill of glen garry. I hope someone finds this wothy of interest!
